칭다오 맥주와 바다만 있는 줄 알았던 도시에서 의외의 공간을 만났습니다. 바로 다바오다오(Dabaodao) 문화거리입니다.
다바오다오는 독일 조계 시절 형성된 옛 도심 지역을 복원해 만든 문화예술 거리입니다. 붉은 기와와 벽돌 건물, 목조 발코니가 이어지는 골목을 걷다 보면 유럽의 작은 마을과 중국 전통거리가 묘하게 섞인 풍경을 만날 수 있습니다.
거리를 가득 채운 붉은 등롱은 중국 특유의 분위기를 더합니다. 골목마다 카페와 공방, 전시공간이 들어서 있고, 오래된 주택들은 감각적인 문화공간으로 다시 태어났습니다. 단순한 관광지가 아니라 과거와 현재가 공존하는 도시재생의 현장입니다.
광장에서는 지역 예술축제가 열리고 있었습니다. 무대 주변으로 시민들과 관광객들이 자유롭게 모여 공연을 즐기는 모습이 인상적입니다. 칭다오 시민들의 일상 속 문화공간이라는 느낌이 강하게 다가왔습니다.
골목 안쪽으로 들어가면 작은 중정과 정원, 오래된 창문과 발코니가 남아 있습니다. 화려하지는 않지만 시간이 만들어낸 흔적들이 공간 곳곳에 스며 있습니다. 장기판을 둘러싼 사람들의 모습에서는 중국 특유의 생활문화도 엿볼 수 있었습니다.
초고층 호텔과 현대적인 상업지구가 바로 뒤에 자리하고 있지만, 다바오다오는 전혀 다른 시간을 보여줍니다. 빠르게 성장한 중국 도시가 과거의 기억을 어떻게 보존하고 활용하는지를 보여주는 흥미로운 사례입니다.
칭다오를 찾는다면 맥주박물관이나 해안가와 함께 다바오다오를 꼭 걸어보시길 권합니다. 도시의 또 다른 얼굴을 만날 수 있는 곳입니다.

Walking Through Dabaodao
Dabaodao is one of Qingdao's most distinctive cultural districts, where restored historic buildings meet modern creative spaces.
Originally developed during the German colonial period, the area features red-tiled roofs, brick facades, wooden balconies, and narrow pedestrian streets. The district has been revitalized as a cultural and leisure block while preserving much of its historic character.
During my visit, red lanterns filled the streets and an outdoor arts festival was underway. Residents and visitors gathered around the stage, creating a lively atmosphere that felt more local than tourist-oriented.
Beyond the main square, quiet courtyards, small gardens, cafés, and galleries reveal the charm of the neighborhood. Traditional Chinese elements blend naturally with European architectural influences, reflecting Qingdao's unique history.
What makes Dabaodao particularly interesting is its role as an urban regeneration project. Surrounded by modern high-rise buildings, the district demonstrates how a rapidly developing Chinese city can preserve and reinterpret its historical heritage.
For visitors to Qingdao, Dabaodao offers a different perspective on the city beyond its famous beer culture and seaside scenery. It is a place where history, culture, and everyday life continue to coexist.
